Psychiatry Colorado Springs
What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is the medical practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing emotional, mental, and behavioral disorders.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specializing in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to measure the mental and physical problems associated with psychological issues.
Who is Psychiatry for?
People seek psychiatry for several reasons. A patient may experience sudden issues, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing “voices.”
Some reasons may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety that never seem to disappear. A patient may have problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.
Getting a Diagnosis
Psychiatrists may conduct lab and psychological tests in combination with patient conversations to create a picture of a patient’s mental and physical health.
To make a diagnosis, a psychiatrist can:
- Look at the relationship between emotions and illnesses
- Examine genetics and family history
- Evaluate medical and psychological data
Then, the psychiatrist can create a proper treatment plan.
