What is anxiety?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, more than 40 million adults suffer from some form of anxiety disorder in the United States. Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent form of mental health issue.

There are many forms of anxiety disorders, including general anxiety disorder. This produces constant feelings of worry and consumes a large part of your day and life. Other forms of anxiety disorders include panic disorders, phobias, and social anxiety disorder.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

The symptoms of anxiety vary, depending on the severity of the disorder and the type of disorder you are suffering from. All anxiety disorders include some type of fear or worry, along with other symptoms like:

      • Feeling constantly worried
      • Trouble concentrating
      • Irritability
      • Easily feeling fatigued
      • Sleep disturbances
      • Feeling on-edge or restless

You may feel nauseated at times or suffer from diarrhea when you have anxiety. It often causes emotional and physical symptoms unique to the specific anxiety disorder you have.

What causes anxiety?

There are several factors that contribute to your anxiety. Unfortunately, genetics play a role in this condition. If you have a blood relative with anxiety, it is more likely that you will also suffer from the disorder.

Your environment is also a huge factor when it comes to anxiety. Extreme stress or some type of trauma can trigger anxiety. This includes the death of a friend or loved one, violent abuse, or chronic illness.

How is anxiety treated?

At Colorado Recovery Solutions, the team offers several successful treatments for anxiety disorders. Typically, treatment falls into two categories: psychotherapy and TMS.

Psychotherapy is a term that encompasses different forms of talk therapy to help you understand your feelings so you can improve them. Cognitive behavioral therapy is just one of the forms of psychotherapy often used for anxiety disorders.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is a type of therapy used to treat severe forms of depression and anxiety. It is a newer treatment that is often used when other, more traditional treatments have not been successful in relieving your symptoms. TMS works by using magnets to “wake up” nerve cells in your brain. This helps improve the symptoms of depression by allowing weakened areas of the brain to be stimulated.

Holistic treatments are also helpful when it comes to easing your symptoms. This includes relaxation techniques, yoga, and massage. All of these help promote a sense of calm to decrease your feelings of fear and worry.
